Well Woman Exams Q & A

Why should every woman have a well woman exam?

A well woman exam is the ideal time for a woman to get an overall medical evaluation from Dr. Capalbo. A well woman exam is a chance to ensure that a woman is healthy. It is the most effective means of prevention any woman can take in protecting her gynecological health. The female body goes through a number of changes before, during, and after the reproductive years. It's important to check that these changes are occurring as they should and that they aren't a sign of illness.

What information should a patient share during a well woman exam?

Women should feel free to ask all questions regarding their overall health, sexuality and sexual activity. A well woman exam is an opportunity for Dr. Capalbo to get to know each patient better, and to build the patient-doctor relationship.

What happens during a well woman exam?

A well woman exam begins with a pelvic exam. During this exam, the doctor will check the reproductive organs for obvious abnormalities or issues. A well woman exam may include a pap smear and an HPV test. If the patient is sexually active or has recently been sexually active, an STD screening may also be done at this time. A clinical breast exam will then be done to evaluate the health of the breast tissue.

When should a young woman's first well woman exam be scheduled?

Young women should have their first well woman visit in their mid to late teens in most cases. Dr. Capalbo is experienced in the area of adolescent gynecology and knows how to set her young patients at ease during their first exam. The first well woman visit may not include a pelvic exam, but will include a clinical breast exam, and provide young women an opportunity to ask questions about her health concerns. After the age of 18, young women should have yearly well woman exams to maintain the best sexual and reproductive health.
