Medical Management Q & A

What are fibroids?

Fibroids are the most common type of tumor found in the reproductive system. Fibroids are composed of muscle cells and connective tissues, and form bumps that can range from pea-sized to the size of a baseball. They develop in most women at some point during their fertile years. Fibroids are generally found during a well woman exam, although diagnostic imaging is needed to confirm specifics about the growth. Medical management of fibroids is important. Dr. Capalbo will monitor fibroid growth during each exam, and will prescribe specific treatments if the patient is experiencing symptoms.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition in which the uterine lining starts to grow outside the uterus. The endometrial growth typically occurs on the ovaries or the fallopian tubes, but can spread to the abdomen or even occur in other areas of the body. Although endometriosis sometimes doesn't cause symptoms, it commonly causes pelvic pain and unusually heavy periods. Many women who suffer from endometriosis struggle with fertility, as well. Proper medical management of endometriosis is important because it can be difficult to deal with. Dr. Capalbo helps patients manage endometriosis symptoms in several ways.

What is PMS?

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is the medical term for recurrent and unusual physical and/or emotional changes that occur immediately prior to the onset of menstrual periods. The difference between PMS and normal pre-menstrual changes is that PMS repeatedly has a negative impact on a woman's life, interfering with her ability to live normally during that time. PMS can cause excessive anger, depression, extreme irritability, changes in social behavior, inability to concentrate, insomnia, and dramatic swings in sexual desire. It can also entail clear physical signs, such as food cravings, bloating, weight gain, headaches, swelling of the extremities, chronic exhaustion, stomach pain, skin breakouts, and aches and pains all over the body. Medical management of PMS can include recommendations for specific lifestyle changes as well as medication, when needed.
